Located on Chicago’s South Side, Theresa’s Lounge became one of the most important gathering places in blues history. For musicians arriving from Mississippi and throughout the South, it often provided a first paid gig, a place to meet fellow musicians, and a welcoming audience. More than a neighborhood tavern, Theresa’s became the heart of a musical family that helped shape Chicago Blues.
Theresa’s Lounge was more than a club.Owner Theresa Needham created something few clubs ever achieve. Musicians remember her warmth, honesty, and unwavering support. Night after night, friendships were formed, careers were launched, and a community grew that extended far beyond the basement stage.

Theresa’s Lounge is a legacy worth preserving. Although it closed its doors years ago, its influence never disappeared. The artists who began their journeys there carried its spirit into clubs, concert halls, recordings, and festivals around the world. Their memories—and the history they lived—deserve to be preserved.
The film “Tribute to Theresa’s Lounge” brings together eleven surviving musicians whose lives were shaped by the club. Through personal interviews, rare photographs, archival images, and newly recorded performances, they share the stories of the woman, the club, and the community that helped define Chicago Blues.

Filmed during the recording of the companion album “John Primer and Friends: Tribute to Theresa’s Lounge,” the documentary captures these artists reflecting together on a place that changed their lives and left an enduring mark on American music.
The music lives on in the companion recording, “John Primer and Friends: Tribute to Theresa’s Lounge.” The record reunites the artists featured in the film to celebrate the music and friendships that began in Theresa’s basement. Together, the album and film preserve an important chapter of Chicago blues history for future generations.
